About Me

Let me show you my Greece.

I’m Akis Tarnaras. I’m Greek, I live in Thessaloniki, and I work in hospitality. I’m also the person behind Yunan Turizmci, where I share Greece through stories, conversations and the places I discover along the way.

Most of those conversations begin in Turkish. But the curiosity behind them travels further: how do people live here? What brings us together? And what can you learn about a country once you start looking beyond its famous sights?

That is the Greece I want to share.

Raised in Athens. Based in Thessaloniki. Closely connected to Türkiye.

My relationship with Türkiye has grown through language, education, work, friendships and years of returning.

I studied Turkish at TÖMER in Ankara and attended Boğaziçi University in Istanbul on a scholarship. Since 2008, I have worked on projects connected to both Greece and Türkiye.

Speaking Turkish has given me access to conversations I would otherwise have missed. It has also changed the way I look at my own country.

I notice the words we share, the songs that feel familiar on both shores, and the small differences that can turn an ordinary encounter into a story worth telling.

When I introduce Greece to a Turkish audience, that experience helps me understand what might need explaining, what might come as a surprise, and what might already feel like home.

Hospitality is my profession.

I studied business and tourism at the University of the Aegean in Greece. My career has taken me through hotel openings and operations, from intimate properties to large resorts.

Today, through my company, WOM Hospitality, I work with hotels on sales, reservations, pricing and guest communication.

That experience shapes how I look at a place to stay. The photographs matter, but so do the welcome, the attention to detail and the way a team responds when something goes wrong.

It also informs the hotel collection on this website. Where a featured hotel has a professional relationship with WOM Hospitality, I make that connection clear.

The Greece you will find here.

There are islands, of course. There is also the mainland: cities, villages, unexpected stops and places you might otherwise pass by.

I explore music, cinema, food, language, history and everyday life. Sometimes a story starts with a word. Sometimes it starts with a conversation, a song or something that makes me laugh.

Through videos, interviews and podcasts, I meet people and follow those stories. In my writing, I also share personal experiences and discuss developments in Greece that deserve a closer look.

When a subject involves history or current affairs, I care about checking sources and making clear where the facts end and my interpretation begins. Understanding each other leaves plenty of room for disagreement.

A place to continue the conversation.

I created this website to bring everything together: a considered selection of hotels, articles, personal writing, videos and podcasts.

It is somewhere to return to when a social media post has disappeared down your feed, or when a short video has left you wanting to know more.

You might be planning your first visit to Greece. You might know the country well already. Or you might simply be curious about life on the other side of the Aegean.

Welcome.

I’m Akis. We have plenty to talk about.

Write to me for hotel suggestions or professional collaborations.
