Greece Cannot Fit on a Postcard
White houses, blue domes, beautiful beaches… They are all real. But the Greece I want to tell you about begins a little beyond the photograph.

Even if you have never seen Greece, you probably have a picture of it in your mind. White houses, blue domes, a table overlooking the sea. And probably a Greek salad beside it.
I have no objection. Those scenes are part of my country. But they are not the whole of it.
The Greece I want to tell you about begins a little beyond the photograph. In the morning life of a neighbourhood in Thessaloniki, on a street in Athens that does not catch your eye at first, in the square of a village whose name you have never heard before.
Because there is a lovely difference between seeing a country and understanding what you are looking at when you are there.
It feels familiar. But is it really the same?
When you come to Greece from Türkiye, some things may feel familiar. A word, a dish, the emotion in a song. The desire to linger a little longer at the table.
I love that closeness. But if we dismiss everything with “We have that too,” we miss the best part of discovery.
Things that look similar can have different stories. Two tables that seem alike can hold different habits and different memories. I think curiosity begins right there: when you notice a detail you had never seen before within something familiar.
A beautiful hotel may not be the right hotel
Working in tourism has taught me one thing very clearly: just because a place is beautiful does not mean it is right for you.
A hotel that looks wonderful in a photograph may not suit the trip you want to take. You might find yourself somewhere lively when you are looking for quiet, or in a location where you need a car to get everywhere when you want to explore on foot.
That is why, when I talk about a hotel, I am not only interested in how it looks. Where it is, what kind of life surrounds it, and who would be happy there matter too.
Sometimes the right choice is a few kilometres away from the place everyone shares.
What will you find here?
I’m Akis. I’m Greek, and I live in Thessaloniki. Since 2008, I have been working on tourism projects between Türkiye and Greece.
Through Yunan Turizmci, I tell you about my country in your language. Sometimes about a city’s character, sometimes about the emotion a song carries, and sometimes about a detail that will genuinely make planning your holiday easier.
Here you will find my own writing, places I want you to discover, and hotels I can explain my reasons for choosing. I will also cover current affairs in Greece, clearly separating news from my personal commentary.
You do not have to love every place. You do not have to love somewhere just because I do. But if you leave here with a slightly clearer sense of what to choose and why, this conversation will have served its purpose.
On your next trip to Greece, I hope you take beautiful photographs. And that you also get to know the country that lies beyond them.
Akis
